Globally, Metal Additive Manufacturing (AM)-used interchangeably with metal 3D printing-is redefining industrial manufacturing as we know it today. Metal AM techniques broadly vary based on the type of metal feedstock (powder or wire), the delivery or placement of feedstock (bed or deposition), the energy source (laser or electron beam), the build environment (inert or vacuum), and other aspects that determine the interaction between the feedstock and energy source.

Selective laser melting is one such metal 3D printing process. A 3D model of the component to be "printed" is sliced into numerous extremely thin (tens of micrometers) layers. Each layer is used to trace a laser along the X-Y plane of a metal powder bed. As the laser interacts with the metal powder, it fuses the powder to form a solid layer equal to one "slice" of the 3D model being printed. As each layer is completed, the build platform is lowered incrementally, and another layer of metal powder is coated, melted, and fused (added) to the previous layer. The process is repeated till the entire component is realized. Other techniques involve deposition of metal powder or wire, delivered coaxially with an energy source such as a laser or electron beam, and melted on the

substrate / surface of the part.
